Compared to the mechanically identical X3 xDrive30i, the X4 has less cargo space and a higher price, so it comes down to whether you think the X4 wins on style points — and by how much.
Despite featuring BMW's sublime B58 turbo inline-6 engine, the M40i gives up hardly any fuel economy to the much less powerful four-cylinder xDrive30i. It's the X4 to have if you're not persuaded that the X3 M40i makes more sense.
Although the X4 M40i also boasts a turbocharged inline-6 and gets much better fuel economy, there's no doubt that the X4 M is better at pinning you back in your seat.
You might as well spring for the X4 Competition, right? What's another $7k at this price point? You get even more power, special 21-inch wheels and a set of nifty sport seats.
