Is the 2025 BMW i4 a Good Car?
"If you can get past the i4's relatively high pricing, you'll be rewarded with a fully competitive luxury EV that's arguably the most rewarding car in its class to drive. The Model 3 may be a packaging miracle with its far lower weight, but the flip side is that the i4 gives you a hefty feeling of Teutonic substance that the Tesla can't match. Although both the Model 3 and the Polestar 2 are great to drive in their own right, the BMW is the purest sport sedan of the bunch. It also offers a convenient hatchback cargo bay that should take any lingering sting out of not buying an SUV."—Ranked #2 out of 3 Compact Luxury Electric Cars
Which 2025 BMW i4 Should I Buy?
MotorDonkey's proprietary vehicle data identifies every significant version of each model so that you can compare and decide. Ordered by price from low to high, here are the versions of the 2025 BMW i4 that you need to be aware of, along with our expert analysis and recommendations.

1. 2025 BMW i4 eDrive35
- Base Price: $52,800
- Range: 266 mi
- Battery Capacity: 70.2 kWh
- Peak Charge Rate: 180 kW
- Drive Type: Rear-wheel drive
- Engine: 1 electric motor
- Horsepower: 282
- Torque: 295 lb-ft
- 0-60: 5.8 sec
- Weight: 4,553 lbs
- Length: 188.5 in
BMW's entry-level i4 eDrive35 delivers quick acceleration for a single-motor EV. Its range is unimpressive, however, and note that the 266-mile figure cited here is with the base 18-inch wheels. If you get the 19-inch wheels, it drops further to 244 miles.
2. 2025 BMW i4 eDrive40 (RWD w/18-inch wheels)
- Base Price: $57,900
- Range: 318 mi
- Battery Capacity: 83.9 kWh
- Peak Charge Rate: 200 kW
- Drive Type: Rear-wheel drive
- Engine: 1 electric motor
- Horsepower: 335
- Torque: 317 lb-ft
- 0-60: 5.5 sec
- Weight: 4,713 lbs
- Length: 188.5 in
The eDrive40 gets into the sweet spot of the i4 lineup, delivering appreciably more range and power for a modest price premium. As with the base eDrive35, we advise resisting the temptation to get the bigger wheels, as you're just leaving extra range on the table.
3. 2025 BMW i4 eDrive40 (RWD w/19-inch wheels)
- Base Price: $58,500
- Range: 295 mi
- Battery Capacity: 83.9 kWh
- Peak Charge Rate: 200 kW
- Drive Type: Rear-wheel drive
- Engine: 1 electric motor
- Horsepower: 335
- Torque: 317 lb-ft
- 0-60: 5.5 sec
- Weight: 4,713 lbs
- Length: 188.5 in
The upsized 19-inch wheels help the i4's appearance but hurt its maximum driving range, so it's important to keep that tradeoff in mind. All else being equal, you also get a smoother ride with smaller wheels.
4. 2025 BMW i4 xDrive40 (AWD w/18-inch wheels)
- Base Price: $62,300
- Range: 287 mi
- Battery Capacity: 83.9 kWh
- Peak Charge Rate: 200 kW
- Drive Type: All-wheel drive
- Engine: 2 electric motors
- Horsepower: 396
- Torque: 443 lb-ft
- 0-60: 4.9 sec
- Weight: 5,022 lbs
- Length: 188.5 in
If you want all-wheel drive in your i4, the dual-motor xDrive40 is the cheapest way to get it. There's nothing cheap about this car, though; it's delightfully well-rounded and provides lots of power, if not quite as much range as we'd like to see.
5. 2025 BMW i4 xDrive40 (AWD w/19-inch wheels)
- Base Price: $62,900
- Range: 268 mi
- Battery Capacity: 83.9 kWh
- Peak Charge Rate: 200 kW
- Drive Type: All-wheel drive
- Engine: 2 electric motors
- Horsepower: 396
- Torque: 443 lb-ft
- 0-60: 4.9 sec
- Weight: 5,022 lbs
- Length: 188.5 in
The xDrive40 is a highly impressive dual-motor EV, but you can see how much those bigger wheels matter. The range plummets with the 19s, although the various 19-inch wheel options do look nice, we'll give you that.
6. 2025 BMW i4 M50 (AWD w/19-inch wheels)
- Base Price: $70,700
- Range: 267 mi
- Battery Capacity: 83.9 kWh
- Peak Charge Rate: 200 kW
- Drive Type: All-wheel drive
- Engine: 2 electric motors
- Horsepower: 536
- Torque: 586 lb-ft
- 0-60: 3.7 sec
- Weight: 5,018 lbs
- Length: 188.5 in
There's no denying the awesomeness of the i4 M50's acceleration, and if you stick with the 19-inch wheels, it delivers impressive range, too, given how quick it is.
7. 2025 BMW i4 M50 (AWD w/20-inch wheels)
- Base Price: $73,200
- Range: 227 mi
- Battery Capacity: 83.9 kWh
- Peak Charge Rate: 200 kW
- Drive Type: All-wheel drive
- Engine: 2 electric motors
- Horsepower: 536
- Torque: 586 lb-ft
- 0-60: 3.7 sec
- Weight: 5,018 lbs
- Length: 188.5 in
What a difference an inch of wheel diameter can make, eh? We just don't see the value in this package — you're paying more to lose 40 miles of range, and you're not gaining any acceleration in the deal.
