Is the 2025 BMW 8 Series Convertible a Good Car?
"Maybe it's just us, but shouldn't the 8 Series have sexier styling to justify its position at the top of BMW's lineup? In any case, the available twin-turbo V8 provides a fantastic soundtrack for top-down cruising, so we'll salute BMW for that."—Ranked #5 out of 6 Premium Luxury Convertibles

1. 2025 BMW 840i Convertible (3.0T Rear-Wheel Drive)
- Base Price: $100,500
- MPG Combined: 24
- Drive Type: Rear-wheel drive
- Engine: 3.0-liter inline-6
- Aspiration: Turbocharged
- Transmission: 8-speed automatic
- Horsepower: 335
- Torque: 369 lb-ft
- 0-60: 5.0 sec
- Weight: 4,156 lbs
- Length: 191.2 in
Just like the coupe, the entry-level 840i convertible has a less powerful version of BMW's excellent turbocharged inline-6 than do many other models. But even if it had the full-strength version, our advice would remain the same to both coupe and convertible shoppers: Skip the six and get the M850i with its stupendous V8.
2. 2025 BMW 840i xDrive Convertible (3.0T All-Wheel Drive)
- Base Price: $103,500
- MPG Combined: 24
- Drive Type: All-wheel drive
- Engine: 3.0-liter inline-6
- Aspiration: Turbocharged
- Transmission: 8-speed automatic
- Horsepower: 335
- Torque: 369 lb-ft
- 0-60: 4.6 sec
- Weight: 4,266 lbs
- Length: 191.2 in
All-wheel-drive convertibles tend to confuse us unless they are front-wheel-drive cars by default, which the 8 Series is not. Why would you want AWD in a fair-weather performance car? As it happens, our pick for an 8 Series convertible has AWD, but only because the V8-powered M850i doesn't come with rear-wheel drive. Long story short, we would pass on this AWD six-cylinder version — you really want to hear that V8 when the top's down, not the six.
3. 2025 BMW M850i xDrive Convertible (4.4T All-Wheel Drive)
- Base Price: $116,000
- MPG Combined: 19
- Drive Type: All-wheel drive
- Engine: 4.4-liter V8
- Aspiration: Turbocharged
- Transmission: 8-speed automatic
- Horsepower: 523
- Torque: 553 lb-ft
- 0-60: 3.9 sec
- Weight: 4,691 lbs
- Length: 191.2 in
We're a broken record when it comes to 8 Series recommendations, but our message is simple: You want the V8 and you should get the V8. The M850i is the version to have, whether it's a coupe or a convertible you're after.
