The entry-level 8 Series oddly gets a less powerful version of the phenomenal B58 turbo inline-6, making do with 335 horsepower (the M340i sedan, for example, extracts 382 hp from the same engine). At this price point it's go V8 or go home, if you ask us.
Adding all-wheel drive lops three-tenths of a second off the 840i's sprint to 60 mph, but it also adds weight, so this will ultimately be a slightly slower car than the rear-wheel-drive 840i. In any case, there's no V8 under the hood; you'll need the 850i for that.
Just like the coupe, the entry-level 840i convertible has a less powerful version of BMW's excellent turbocharged inline-6 than do many other models. But even if it had the full-strength version, our advice would remain the same to both coupe and convertible shoppers: Skip the six and get the M850i with its stupendous V8.
All-wheel-drive convertibles tend to confuse us unless they are front-wheel-drive cars by default (looking at you, Audi), which the 8 Series is not. Why would you want AWD in a fair-weather performance car? As it happens, our pick for an 8 Series convertible has AWD, but only because the M850i doesn't come with rear-wheel drive. Long story short, we would pass on this AWD six-cylinder version — you really want to hear that V8 when the top's down, not the six.
That's what we're talking about. Why mess around with the six-cylinder 840i when the M850i exists? You're not buying a top-shelf luxury coupe to leave nearly 200 horsepower on the table. Fork over the extra $15k ($12k, really, comparing 840i xDrive to M850i xDrive) and don't look back.
We're a broken record when it comes to 8 Series recommendations, but our message is simple: You want the V8 and you should get the V8. The M850i is the version to have, whether it's a coupe or a convertible you're after.
