Is the 2025 BMW 4 Series a Good Car?
"The 4 Series isn't easy on the eyes, but if it's excellent engineering you're after, this BMW certainly delivers. Both the standard four-cylinder engine and the optional B58 inline-6 are turbocharged gems, while the chassis is as expertly tuned as that of the segment-topping BMW 3 Series sedan. It's just that you're giving up a lot of practicality here versus the 3 Series, and the expected payoff in the form of head-turning style just isn't there."—Ranked #2 out of 4 Compact Luxury Coupes

- 2025 BMW 4 Series M440i xDrive Convertible (3.0T All-Wheel Drive)
1. 2025 BMW 4 Series 430i Coupe (2.0T Rear-Wheel Drive)
- Base Price: $50,700
- MPG Combined: 31
- Drive Type: Rear-wheel drive
- Engine: 2.0-liter inline-4
- Aspiration: Turbocharged
- Transmission: 8-speed automatic
- Horsepower: 255
- Torque: 295 lb-ft
- 0-60: 5.6 sec
- Weight: 3,677 lbs
- Length: 187.9 in
There's no debating the engineering excellence that goes into even the entry-level 430i, but charging more than 50 large for a four-cylinder coupe with 255 horsepower seems like a big ask.
2. 2025 BMW 4 Series 430i xDrive Coupe (2.0T All-Wheel Drive)
- Base Price: $52,700
- MPG Combined: 30
- Drive Type: Rear-wheel drive
- Engine: 2.0-liter inline-4
- Aspiration: Turbocharged
- Transmission: 8-speed automatic
- Horsepower: 255
- Torque: 295 lb-ft
- 0-60: 5.4 sec
- Weight: 3,805 lbs
- Length: 187.9 in
If you're sold on the four-cylinder 430i, you've got nothing to lose by adding xDrive AWD other than the $2k BMW will charge you. As usual, BMW integrates AWD seamlessly with barely any effect on fuel economy — and the B48 four-cylinder engine's updates for 2025 improve the EPA's fuel economy estimate by more than 10 percent.
3. 2025 BMW 4 Series 430i Convertible (2.0T Rear-Wheel Drive)
- Base Price: $58,700
- MPG Combined: 30
- Drive Type: Rear-wheel drive
- Engine: 2.0-liter inline-4
- Aspiration: Turbocharged
- Transmission: 8-speed automatic
- Horsepower: 255
- Torque: 295 lb-ft
- 0-60: 6.0 sec
- Weight: 4,026 lbs
- Length: 187.9 in
We'd want a bit more oomph in our luxury convertible, but there's always a market for laid-back boulevard cruisers, and the 430i mostly delivers those goods. Although the four-cylinder engine's output is unchanged for 2025, internal changes (including the addition of a 48-volt mild hybrid system and Miller cycle combustion) result in significantly better fuel economy.
4. 2025 BMW 4 Series 430i xDrive Convertible (2.0T All-Wheel Drive)
- Base Price: $60,700
- MPG Combined: 28
- Drive Type: Rear-wheel drive
- Engine: 2.0-liter inline-4
- Aspiration: Turbocharged
- Transmission: 8-speed automatic
- Horsepower: 255
- Torque: 295 lb-ft
- 0-60: 5.9 sec
- Weight: 4,145 lbs
- Length: 187.9 in
We can't think of a great reason to add all-wheel drive to a luxury convertible, especially since the current 4 Series has a soft top rather than its predecessor's retractable hardtop. If you had the hardtop, okay, maybe you'd like to drive it through the winter. But with the soft top, why bother?
5. 2025 BMW 4 Series M440i Coupe (3.0T Rear-Wheel Drive)
- Base Price: $64,250
- MPG Combined: 30
- Drive Type: Rear-wheel drive
- Engine: 3.0-liter inline-6
- Aspiration: Turbocharged
- Transmission: 8-speed automatic
- Horsepower: 386
- Torque: 398 lb-ft
- 0-60: 4.6 sec
- Weight: 3,896 lbs
- Length: 187.9 in
The M440i Coupe's price is up by nearly $3k for 2025, but you do get the revised version of the B58 turbocharged inline-6 with increased output and 10-percent-better fuel economy. This remains the sweet spot in the 4 Series lineup in terms of performance, comfort and value.
6. 2025 BMW 4 Series M440i xDrive Coupe (3.0T All-Wheel Drive)
- Base Price: $66,250
- MPG Combined: 29
- Drive Type: All-wheel drive
- Engine: 3.0-liter inline-6
- Aspiration: Turbocharged
- Transmission: 8-speed automatic
- Horsepower: 386
- Torque: 398 lb-ft
- 0-60: 4.2 sec
- Weight: 4,019 lbs
- Length: 187.9 in
Pairing the M440i coupe's superb turbo six with all-wheel drive seems like a great idea if your climate calls for it. Per usual, BMW only charges $2k for the upgrade, and the EPA says you'll see a remarkable 4-mpg improvement with the revised B58 engine this year, jumping from 25 mpg combined all the way up to 29 mpg combined.
7. 2025 BMW 4 Series M440i Convertible (3.0T Rear-Wheel Drive)
- Base Price: $72,250
- MPG Combined: 29
- Drive Type: Rear-wheel drive
- Engine: 3.0-liter inline-6
- Aspiration: Turbocharged
- Transmission: 8-speed automatic
- Horsepower: 386
- Torque: 398 lb-ft
- 0-60: 5.0 sec
- Weight: 4,242 lbs
- Length: 187.9 in
The B58 turbocharged inline-6 sounds great anyway, so if you pair it with a top that drops, all the better. Sure, it's expensive, but to us there's no contest between this machine and the four-cylinder 430i. You gotta get the six, especially for 2025, which brings a 3-mpg boost in fuel economy and a bunch more torque besides.
8. 2025 BMW 4 Series M440i xDrive Convertible (3.0T All-Wheel Drive)
- Base Price: $74,250
- MPG Combined: 28
- Drive Type: All-wheel drive
- Engine: 3.0-liter inline-6
- Aspiration: Turbocharged
- Transmission: 8-speed automatic
- Horsepower: 386
- Torque: 398 lb-ft
- 0-60: 4.6 sec
- Weight: 4,292 lbs
- Length: 187.9 in
We have to wonder what the use case is for a 386-horsepower soft-top convertible with all-wheel drive, but hey, maybe you just want to get to 60 mph four-tenths quicker than you would with rear-wheel drive. We can respect that.
