The entry-level 230i coupe is regrettably not available with a manual transmission, but if you're cool with an automatic (as most folks are), you'll probably love the 230i's all-around excellence.
As is typical with BMWs, adding all-wheel drive to the 230i doesn't hurt fuel economy much, so it's more about personal preference. We'd save a couple grand and go with rear-wheel drive, but you can't go wrong here.
The M240i is powered by BMW's fabulous "B58" turbocharged inline-6 engine, which might be all you need to know. It's one of the finest engines on the market today, full stop, and it's remarkably fuel-efficient for how powerful it is.
The all-wheel-drive M240i xDrive somehow gets an extra mpg from the EPA in city driving, making it technically more fuel-efficient than the rear-wheel-drive M240i despite being heavier and theoretically having more drivetrain loss. That isn't supposed to happen, so maybe the EPA fact-checker had a bad day? In any case, we know the B58 turbo six is insanely fuel-efficient, so if any engine could flip the script, it's this one.
