The base A4 Sportback 40 TFSI costs about 10% more than the A4 sedan 40 TFSI, yet it shares the latter's modest 201-horsepower engine. The question is how much value the Sportback's sleek hatchback bodystyle adds for you — and whether you're content with those 201 horses or want to step up to the stronger A5 Sportback 45 TFSI.
The A4 Sportback 45 TFSI adds a lot of horses for not a lot of money, though you could argue that the base 40 TFSI is already rather pricey. For us, it's a no-brainer to upgrade to the 45 TFSI — we'll take the roughly 10% fuel-economy hit in return for 30% more power. You get upsized 19-inch wheels, too, which really tie the room together in terms of the A5 Sportback's styling.
The S5 Sportback picks up where the A5 Sportback 45 TFSI left off, swapping out the latter's four-cylinder engine in favor of a turbocharged V6 that'll catapult you to 60 mph in about four and a half seconds. Not bad for a handy hatchback that can carry a lot of stuff.
