The S4 is one of many examples of Audi's nomenclature trickery that makes you think you're dealing with a separate model. You're not — the S4 is to the regular A4 what the BMW M340i is to the standard 330i. It's more similar to the base car than it is different, in other words. Like the M340i, the S4 is primarily differentiated by its turbocharged six-cylinder engine, which represents a major upgrade over the base turbo four. There are various styling, suspension and other tweaks to emphasize the sporty theme, but the S4's proposition is really about that engine: Do you want it enough to pay a lot more? As far as that goes, don't expect the kind of magical fuel economy that the M340i gives you, but there's no doubt that Audi's turbo V6 is a whole lot more capable and gratifying than the A4's 2.0T four-cylinder.
