Longer than a Civic or a Corolla, the Jetta is more like what midsize sedans used to be, and that's a sweet spot for many sedan shoppers. This manual version — only offered in base S or one-level-up Sport trim — is a hoot, punching far above its 158-horsepower rating and nipping at the heels of the Civic Si. Great fuel economy, too. Shame that 2024 will be the final year for the manual.
Just like its stick-shift counterpart, the automatic Jetta is mighty impressive under the hood, delivering frugal fuel economy along with quick acceleration that approaches sport-compact standards. The value here is remarkable, at least if you stay close to the starting price. Note that higher Jetta trims don't just cost more up front — they also cost you more at the pump, where the Jetta Sport, Jetta SE and Jetta SEL trims all fall back a notch to 33 mpg combined (29 city/40 highway). We'd be strongly tempted to stick with the base S to get the most value on both sides of the deal.
