The Corolla Cross is a smart product with a remarkably low base price. It's only a few inches longer than a Corolla hatchback and about 7 inches shorter than a Corolla sedan, yet it packs a ton of versatility into that small footprint, offering truly SUV-grade cargo capacity and ground clearance. It's also one of the slowest small SUVs on the market, but at least Toyota's unusual "Direct Shift-CVT" utilizes a fixed ratio from a stop to make takeoffs feel more like you're driving a conventional automatic.
2. 2024 Toyota Corolla Cross 2.0 All-Wheel Drive
- Base Price: $25,160
- MPG Combined: 30
- Drive Type: All-wheel drive
- Engine: 2.0-liter inline-4
- Aspiration: Naturally aspirated
- Transmission: CVT
- Horsepower: 169
- Torque: 151 lb-ft
- 0-60: 9.2 sec
- Weight: 3,295 lbs
- Length: 175.6 in
- Towing Capacity: 1,500 lbs
It's nice that Toyota gives you a larger gas tank in the AWD Corolla Cross (13.2 gallons versus 12.4) to compensate for the fuel economy deficit of 2 mpg combined. All-wheel drive also adds weight, however, and the last thing the Corolla Cross's overburdened engine needs is more pounds to haul around. It's rare these days to come across a new vehicle that needs more than 9 seconds to reach 60 mph. We're not saying the front-drive Corolla Cross is a speed demon, but you can expect it to be a little lighter on its feet, and it's cheaper, too.
3. 2024 Toyota Corolla Cross Hybrid All-Wheel Drive
- Base Price: $28,220
- MPG Combined: 42
- Drive Type: All-wheel drive
- Engine: 2.0-liter inline-4
- Aspiration: Naturally aspirated
- Transmission: CVT
- Horsepower: 196
- Torque: N/A
- 0-60: 7.3 sec
- Weight: 3,395 lbs
- Length: 176.8 in
- Towing Capacity: 1,500 lbs
Adding the hybrid powertrain from the Prius has a transformative effect on the Corolla Cross, lopping nearly 2 seconds off its 0-60 time while improving its fuel economy by about 35 percent. The Corolla Cross Hybrid does start at a significantly higher price than the regular Corolla Cross, but this is one upcharge that's definitely worth it. Notably, the Hybrid also comes standard with all-wheel drive.
