If you like the Outback, the main question is whether the base 2.5-liter engine has enough zest for your taste. Zero to 60 in the mid-8s is the stuff of yesteryear for a midsize SUV, frankly, as in 10-20 years ago. But if it feels good enough to you, there's a lot of all-around goodness in the rest of this package.
The Outback XT's turbocharged engine puts its acceleration in another league compared to the base Outback, but the price is also pushing $40k to start, so that could pose a dilemma. We think it's worth the upgrade, but that's because we're power junkies and we know it. If you're not, that's a lot of money you could keep in your pocket. By the way, the turbocharged engine also unlocks the Outback's maximum 3,500-pound towing capacity, in case that's a consideration for you.
If you're reading the numbers here closely, you'll have noticed that the Wilderness beats the XT to 60 mph by half a second despite seemingly having the exact same powertrain. What gives? Just like the Forester Wilderness, the Outback Wilderness has a higher 4.44:1 final drive ratio (versus the XT's 4.11:1) to give it more grunt for low-traction off-roading. It's shorter gearing, in other words, which always gets you a jump off the line. So, not only is the Wilderness the most capable Outback, it's also the quickest. You pay for it at the pump, no doubt, but this is a pretty cool rig.
