Is the 2024 Nissan Z a Good Car?
"There was a lot of buzz around the new Z when it was in development, but the result has been somewhat disappointing. Why? Because Nissan basically reused the platform from the discontinued 370Z, which debuted way back in '09, and paired it with a new body, engine and interior. Don't get us wrong, we love the idea of a compact two-seater with a 400-horsepower turbo V6, and we especially love that a manual transmission is still available. But you can't escape the sense that Nissan was making do with limited resources rather than really going for it with a clean-sheet redesign."—Ranked #4 out of 4 Sports Cars

1. 2024 Nissan Z 3.0T Automatic Transmission
- Base Price: $42,970
- MPG Combined: 22
- Drive Type: Rear-wheel drive
- Engine: 3.0-liter V6
- Aspiration: Turbocharged
- Transmission: 9-speed automatic
- Horsepower: 400

Nissan lets you have the automatic transmission for the same price as the manual, and as you can see, it delivers improved acceleration. Still, this is far from a luxurious touring coupe; it's a loud, firm-riding sports car, and that calls for a stick shift if you ask us.
2. 2024 Nissan Z 3.0T Manual Transmission
- Base Price: $42,970
- MPG Combined: 20
- Drive Type: Rear-wheel drive
- Engine: 3.0-liter V6
- Aspiration: Turbocharged
- Transmission: 6-speed manual
- Horsepower: 400
- Torque: 350 lb-ft
- 0-60: 4.5 sec
- Weight: 3,486 lbs
- Length: 172.4 in
The base Z with the manual is a fine choice in our book, as it's got the fun transmission and Nissan doesn't charge extra for it. We're impressed with the Z's performance in this low-$40s price range, but it gets less impressive as the price creeps up via fancier trim levels.
3. 2024 Nissan Z NISMO (3.0T Automatic Transmission)
- Base Price: $65,750
- MPG Combined: 19
- Drive Type: Rear-wheel drive
- Engine: 3.0-liter V6
- Aspiration: Turbocharged
- Transmission: 9-speed automatic
- Horsepower: 420
- Torque: 384 lb-ft
- 0-60: 3.9 sec
- Weight: 3,704 lbs
- Length: 173.2 in
We hesitate to call a car "dead on arrival," especially when it boasts the rich history of Nissan's Z car. But charging $23k extra for the Z NISMO does not seem like a recipe for success. Nissan only gives you 20 extra horsepower for all that money, and while the NISMO is slightly quicker than the regular automatic-transmission Z to 60 mph and the quarter-mile mark, its quarter-mile trap speed is 1 mph slower. Why are we comparing it to the automatic Z? Because that's the other thing — the NISMO comes only with the automatic. We love what the Z stands for, but we're not sure what Nissan was thinking with this NISMO.
