We like that every Frontier comes with a big naturally aspirated V6 — none of these newfangled turbo-four shenanigans. The price leader is the S King Cab, which, like all King Cab variants, comes only with the longer six-foot cargo bed. "King Cab," in case you didn't know, is Nissan's term for an extended cab or access cab; in brief, it gives you a small backseat with rear-hinged doors that can't open unless the relevant front door is also open. Note that Crew Cab, with its four conventional doors, offers your choice of the shorter five-foot bed or the six-footer, and the short bed is the cheaper option there. If you want the Crew Cab and don't mind the shorter bed, you're looking at $31,810 to start, so barely more than the King Cab long bed.
The Crew Cab is a major upgrade over the King Cab for your passengers — there's room for five instead of four, with conventional forward-hinged doors for the backseat and a lot more rear legroom, too. Unlike the King Cab, the Crew Cab offers your choice of the two bed lengths. With the short bed, the Frontier Crew Cab is exactly as long from nose to tail as the Frontier King Cab with its standard long bed.
Adding four-wheel drive to the Frontier King Cab bumps up the price by about $3k but only reduces fuel economy by a single mile per gallon. It's a tempting upgrade.
The 4x4 Crew Cab is a good example of the Frontier's strong value proposition. For less than $35k to start (in the base S trim), you get a midsize truck with genuine off-road capability and four-door versatility.
Available only as a crew cab with the shorter bed, the PRO-4X is Nissan's answer to the various factory-prepped off-roaders from Ford, GM and Toyota. It's less hardcore than some, but if you just want a no-nonsense truck that's ready for the trails, this Frontier merits a close look. A back-to-back drive with the Colorado Trail Boss, for example, may be in order.
Offered only in the SV trim level, the Frontier Crew Cab with the long bed is a highly versatile carrier of both people and cargo.
Pairing the larger cab with the longer bed and four-wheel drive, the Frontier Crew Cab Long Bed 4x4 is a niche play in this segment. It's the heaviest Frontier style, not surprisingly, as well as being tied for the longest with the 4x2 variant. Most people who want a midsize truck are probably thinking a little smaller, but if you want to max out passenger space, cargo space and off-road capability, this is your Frontier.
