It's getting harder to find V8-powered family vehicles these days — make that a lot harder — but the GLE continues to offer Benz's fantastic twin-turbo 4.0-liter V8 in two different variants. The GLE 580 is the more affordable one, and it offers the bonus of an available third-row seat. The AMG GLE 63 S, meanwhile, throws caution to the wind with 603 horsepower, an extravagant base price and mandatory two-row seating. (Photo: Mercedes-Benz)

As ever, the GLE offers a diverse array of powertrains, including the GLE 450e plug-in hybrid pictured here. (Photo: Mercedes-Benz)

The GLE's styling has a chunky presence on the road, and the 450 model shown here has smooth turbocharged inline-6 power to back it up. (Photo: Mercedes-Benz)

The question with any plug-in hybrid is always, "How many all-electric miles does it give you?" And the answer in the case of the GLE 450e is "Wow," because the EPA rates it at an even 50 miles of electric range. That's mighty impressive for a nearly three-ton family hauler. (Photo: Mercedes-benz)

The 603-horsepower AMG GLE 63 S seen here reminds us that the GLE 580 is the pick of this litter. For about $40k less, the 580 gives you a turbocharged 4.0-liter V8, just like the GLE 63, and although it drops to 510 hp (can you bear the humiliation?), it also offers a third-row seat, whereas the AMG does not. It's hilarious how hard it is to find a press photo of the 2025 Mercedes-Benz GLE 580. We're talking about a $90k luxury SUV with a 510-horsepower turbo V8 under the hood. Only in Germany would such a serious machine get lost in the shuffle somehow. We strongly prefer the 580 to the AMG GLE 53, which costs the same but makes do with an inline-6 that's less powerful and torquey. (Photo: Mercedes-Benz)

Not the GLE's best angle, perhaps, but someone at Mercedes PR had a vision. Are those rocks? Glacier chunks? (Photo: Mercedes-Benz)

Excellent seat comfort is generally something you can count on in a Mercedes, and the GLE is no exception. These thrones are built for the long haul. (Photo: Mercedes-Benz)

We like how Mercedes has integrated the GLE's widescreen infotainment module into the flow of the dashboard. It's large and full of features, yet it doesn't dominate the dash aesthetically like so many screens today. (Photo: Mercedes-benz)

The GLE's widescreen infotainment display actually consists of twin 12.3-inch screens that are housed within a single frame. (Photo: Mercedes-benz)

Although the GLE's central screen is touch-activated, you can also control it through this touchpad on the center console. (Photo: Mercedes-Benz)
