The base CX-50 has a lot of things going for it, but the engine isn't one of them. It runs out of breath at higher speeds, and it's also rather inefficient for an ordinary four-cylinder engine. Better to stretch for the turbo engine if you can.
The turbo is the way to go if you're looking at the CX-50. At a starting price of $38k, it's an appealing proposition, even compared to entry-level luxury SUVs. You get 1,500 extra pounds of towing capacity with the turbo, too.
