If it were our final-year F-Type, we'd want it with the classic sports-car combo of V8 and rear-wheel drive. Happily, that's exactly how the base model comes. We wouldn't change a thing — and no, you don't need the 575-horsepower version of this engine, though we're not saying don't try it.
The F-Type's appeal is all about that supercharged V8, so it's fitting that Jag has dropped the V6 and (gasp!) four-cylinder engines from years past. With the top down and that V8 roaring, it's about as good as driving gets.
The optional all-wheel drive system is a strange aspect of this final-year F-Type lineup. If you want it with the base V8, you have to pay an extra $12k to get it, because it comes bundled with a "75" package celebrating 75 years of Jaguar sports cars. That package is largely aesthetic, so to us, sticking with the base rear-drive coupe is a no-brainer. You get the same exact engine without the added weight of AWD, and you pay a lot less for it.
This is technically the "75" edition with a handful of add-ons aimed at celebrating Jaguar's 7.5 decades of building cars like the F-Type. Our advice? Keep a lot of money in your pocket and get the entry-level rear-drive convertible instead. Same engine, less weight, less coin.
So what do you get for your $35k or so, comparing the base F-Type to this top-shelf R Coupe? Half a second to 60 mph, for one thing. Six mph at the quarter mile, for another. In our view, the character of the 5.0-liter supercharged V8 is similar enough either way that it doesn't make sense to splurge on the all-wheel-drive R, especially since we'd prefer the base model's lighter rear-drive build. But let's face it, an F-Type doesn't "make sense" no matter how you slice it. Maybe this is a better question: Is the R an awesome car? Without a doubt.
Our primary advice is to drive the 2024 F-Type convertible configurations back to back, if at all possible. Do you really want AWD versus the base rear-wheel-drive setup? Does the R-specific, 575-horsepower tune of the supercharged V8 move the needle enough for you to spring for it? You can't go wrong here, obviously, and we envy you those test drives if you manage to make them happen.
