The base 8 Series Gran Coupe has a lot going for it, including fairly swift acceleration and laudable fuel economy. But in our view, you gotta put the 8 in "8 Series" and get the V8 engine, which means ponying up for the M850i.
We still think you should stretch for the V8-powered M850i, but it's quite impressive that BMW's xDrive all-wheel-drive system doesn't hurt the 840i Gran Coupe's fuel economy one iota, according to the EPA. Rear-wheel drive or AWD, you get the same fuel economy estimates either way.
The M850i is the Gran Coupe to have, even if you include the M8 in the conversation. It's got largely the same twin-turbo V8 as the M8 and it's nearly as quick.
Alpina wheels are always a sight to behold, but let's cut to the chase — there's no rational argument for spending an extra $50k or so on this car versus the M850i xDrive Gran Coupe, which is mechanically almost identical and delivers almost the same performance.
