MotorDonkey's proprietary vehicle data identifies every significant version of each model so that you can compare and decide. 1. 2025 BMW 840i Gran Coupe (3.0T Rear-Wheel Drive)
- Base Price: $90,800
- MPG Combined: 24
- Drive Type: Rear-wheel drive
- Engine: 3.0-liter inline-6
- Aspiration: Turbocharged
- Transmission: 8-speed automatic
- Horsepower: 335
- Torque: 369 lb-ft
- 0-60: 4.9 sec
- Weight: 4,262 lbs
- Length: 200.2 in
The base 8 Series Gran Coupe has a lot going for it, including fairly swift acceleration and laudable fuel economy. But in our view, you gotta put the 8 in "8 Series" and get the V8 engine, which means ponying up for the M850i.
2. 2025 BMW 840i xDrive Gran Coupe (3.0T All-Wheel Drive)
- Base Price: $93,800
- MPG Combined: 24
- Drive Type: All-wheel drive
- Engine: 3.0-liter inline-6
- Aspiration: Turbocharged
- Transmission: 8-speed automatic
- Horsepower: 335
- Torque: 369 lb-ft
- 0-60: 4.6 sec
- Weight: 4,381 lbs
- Length: 200.2 in
We still think you should stretch for the V8-powered M850i, but it's quite impressive that BMW's xDrive all-wheel-drive system doesn't hurt the 840i Gran Coupe's fuel economy one iota, according to the EPA. Rear-wheel drive or AWD, you get the same fuel economy estimates either way.
3. 2025 BMW M850i xDrive Gran Coupe (4.4T Rear-Wheel Drive)
- Base Price: $106,300
- MPG Combined: 19
- Drive Type: All-wheel drive
- Engine: 4.4-liter V8
- Aspiration: Turbocharged
- Transmission: 8-speed automatic
- Horsepower: 523
- Torque: 553 lb-ft
- 0-60: 3.7 sec
- Weight: 4,758 lbs
- Length: 200.3 in
The M850i is the Gran Coupe to have, even if you include the M8 in the conversation. It's got largely the same twin-turbo V8 as the M8 and it's nearly as quick.
4. 2025 BMW Alpina B8 Gran Coupe
- Base Price: $151,500
- MPG Combined: 19
- Drive Type: All-wheel drive
- Engine: 4.4-liter V8
- Aspiration: Turbocharged
- Transmission: 8-speed automatic
- Horsepower: 612
- Torque: 590 lb-ft
- 0-60: 3.3 sec
- Weight: 4,831 lbs
- Length: 200.4 in
Alpina wheels are always a sight to behold, but let's cut to the chase — there's no rational argument for spending an extra $50k or so on this car versus the M850i xDrive Gran Coupe, which is mechanically almost identical and delivers almost the same performance.
